Season 1 Episode 1 (35:42)

My Interpretation

Before the crazy cinematography begins, I wanted to point out the first thing I noticed. This was the use of the mirror prior to exiting the room. The audience is made to believe that we are looking at Rue standing next to a mirror. However, when the camera pans, it is revealed that we were looking at her through the mirror the entire time. While this is trippy, that is not the only reason it was used. I believe that it was also used to represent the shift from being sober to under the influence. Mirror often times signify a change in reality or even a break from reality and I believe that is also how it is used in this scene.

As we enter the new reality, as Rue walks out the door, the unique cinematography gets the point across precisely. While I am not have experience using drugs, I definitely understand the feeling that is bring portrayed through these camera effects. Everyone has experience the world seeming like it was spinning, whether it was from spinning too much on playground toys, or drinking too much and having this effect occur, this is a feeling everyone can relate to.

I also found it quite brilliant how they had the room spinning around Rue but all of the other extras were right side up and spinning with the room. I found this did a great job at portraying how alienating drugs can be. Rue is struggling to stay upright while everyone is not having any trouble and doesn't even understand what Rue is experiencing.
